LUANDA, Angola — Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on Friday promised more investment in oil- and diamond-rich Angola, a southern African country that has had close relations with Moscow’s governments since the Cold War.
Medvedev’s one-day visit to Angola came at the end of an African tour that has underlined Moscow’s economic interests on the continent.
After Medvedev met Angola’s President Jose Eduardo dos Santos, the two leaders issued a joint communique pledging more Russian investment in such areas as mining, hydroelectric power and communications, but did not offer figures on Russia’s involvement.
Medvedev’s tour — which included stops in Egypt, Nigeria and Namibia — is the second by a Russian president in sub-Saharan Africa, and the first in more than three years.
