WASHINGTON — Sen. Tom Coburn met with President Barack Obama at the White House on Wednesday, but wouldn’t say what they discussed.
Don Tatro, a spokesman for Coburn, R-Muskogee, said, "All his talks with the president are private.”
The White House doesn’t necessarily see them that way, but Obama press secretary Robert Gibbs wasn’t able to give reporters much information at his daily briefing.
Gibbs said he thought the president intended to discuss with Coburn the Supreme Court vacancy created when Justice David Souter announced he was leaving at the end of the current term. Coburn is a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, which will hold hearings on the nominee ultimately selected by the president.
Coburn, a friend of Obama’s since the two were first elected to the Senate in 2004, said earlier this year he sometimes talks to the president on the phone, but he wouldn’t divulge details of talks.
