WASHINGTON (AP) — Two Obama administration officials say the White House is considering issuing an executive order to indefinitely hold some Guantanamo Bay detainees in prison. The order wouldn't take effect until after the next fiscal year begins on Oct. 1. Congress has blocked the administration from spending any money in the 2009 fiscal year to imprison the detainees in the United States.
Both officials spoke Friday on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the issue publicly.
The White House also is considering asking Congress to pass new laws that would allow the indefinite detentions.
One official familiar with the plans said no final decisions have been made.
