Strong winds pick up stalled fire in California

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (AP) — Gusting winds have stirred a stalled wildfire threatening 2,000 homes in Southern California.

The fire died down to whispy plumes Wednesday but afternoon strong winds have begun blowing smoke from the slopes of the Santa Ynez Mountains and over the city toward the ocean. Much of the city lies between the shore and the mountain range.

The National Weather Service reported winds up to 24 mph and gusts to 39 mph at Santa Barbara Municipal Airport on Wednesday afternoon.

The fire erupted Tuesday on the slopes above the city and was last estimated at just under 200 acres. About 1,200 homes have been evacuated.

The fire's cause remains under investigation.
