Ex-solider may get life in prison


PADUCAH, Ky. — An ex-soldier convicted of rape and murder in Iraq has been spared the death penalty and will get a life sentence after jurors couldn’t agree unanimously on a punishment. Former Pfc. Steven Dale Green raped a 14-year-old Iraqi girl in March 2006 and murdered her and her family.

Gay policy may change
WASHINGTON — The White House said Thursday officials are working to overturn a policy that bans gays and lesbians from serving openly in the military. The comment pushed back Pentagon assessments that such efforts were low priorities and Democratic activists’ complaints of slow progress.

Blackwater issued guns
RALEIGH, N.C. — Two men who worked for the security firm formerly known as Blackwater say the company issued weapons to employees in Afghanistan despite the military prohibiting workers from carrying guns. Justin Cannon and Steven McClain were involved in a shooting that killed an Afghan and injured two others.
