WASHINGTON — The U.S. Senate approved legislation by Sen. Tom Coburn on Tuesday that would allow people to carry loaded firearms into national parks and wildlife refuges in states that permit concealed carrying of guns.
The vote was 67-29 and came on an amendment offered to a bill aimed at curbing certain practices by the credit card industry.
"If an American citizen has a right to carry a firearm in their state, it makes no sense to treat them like a criminal if they pass through a national park while in possession of a firearm,” Coburn said.
Visitors to national parks and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service lands currently must have their firearms unloaded or packed away.
