Speeding Oklahoma roads ,claim lives

PIEDMONT — A 14-year-old Piedmont boy died early Wednesday when he crashed while driving his parents’ car without permission, Piedmont Police Chief Jerry Koester said.

Hestin Cole Farris took the car sometime after 4:30 a.m. and crashed on a dirt road about a mile from his house, Koester said. Police estimate Farris could have been driving in excess of 100 mph when he lost control on Frisco Road near Apache Road. Hisbody was discovered after daylight.

"I don’t know exactly why he crashed, but it was probably a combination of speed and inexperience,” Koester said.

Farris, who would have been a sophomore this fall at Piedmont High School, was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the car, Koester said

Victim identified
Police said front-end loading forks that fell off a truck onto Interstate 44 were responsible for the Tuesday death of a Newcastle motorist.
Melvin Ray Ake, 68, died at a local hospital after his van hit the forks and flipped over the cable barriers about 3:15 p.m. on I-44 near SW 74.

Investigators said Ake was driving south behind a flatbed trailer rig pulling a forklift when the steel forks fell off the trailer. Ake’s vehicle ran over the forks and rolled several times.

Ake was not wearing a seatbelt, police said.

It was unknown whether the truck driver will be cited in the accident.
