BAGHDAD — The government Saturday blamed al-Qaida in Iraq for killing a prominent Sunni lawmaker as leaders across the sectarian divide rallied together, deploring the slaying and pledging to prevent a new wave of religious violence that once took the country to the brink of civil war.
Harith al-Obeidi, leader of the largest Sunni bloc in the Iraqi parliament, was shot dead Friday.
The parliament convened a special session Saturday, and speakers expressed their outrage over al-Obeidi’s death.
"Terrorism always targets those ... who are able to bring change,” Shiite lawmaker Ali al-Adeeb said. "We seek change while terrorism wants to promote the former regime.”
